Author Kadir Nelson to speak in library program

Caldecott Medal winning painter, illustrator and author Kadir Nelson, also known for his striking covers for The New Yorker magazine, will present The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation’s annual Marian McFadden Memorial Lecture on Sept. 29. This event will take place at 7 p.m. at the Madam Walker Legacy Center, 617 Indiana Avenue in Indianapolis.

Nelson will be speaking about his career and inspirations as an artist and will be signing books after the event. He has authored and/or illustrated over 30 books for children and received the Caldecott Medal for children’s book illustration for his artwork in "The Undefeated," written by Kwame Alexander. His contributions to the book also earned him the 2020 Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award and the book was named a 2020 Newbery Honor Book for children’s literature. He was originally slated to speak at the Marian McFadden Memorial Lecture in 2020, but his visit was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For tickets, visit or click here:
