IndyZoo is one of the most highly acclaimed zoos in the country. Its high standards has earned it a prestigious accreditation spanning four decades! Here is their press release:
The Indianapolis Zoo has earned accreditation from the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA), marking 40 years of continuous association with AZA.
Fewer than 10 percent of all federally licensed animal exhibitors meet AZA’s high standards. The rigorous process of accreditation through AZA is something the Zoo undergoes once every five years. The Zoo, which is home to nearly 1,400 animals and 47,000 plants, was the first in the nation to be triple accredited as a zoo, aquarium and botanical garden. It’s also one of the largest zoos in the U.S. that receives no direct tax support.
“The Association of Zoos and Aquariums only accredits zoos and aquariums that can meet the highest standards for animal care, welfare, conservation and education,” said AZA President and CEO, Dan Ashe. “Indianapolis doesn’t just meet those standards, it exceeds them, and is helping us to continually raise the bar, expand achievement, and elevate our expectations.”
An extensive review and inspection of all areas was conducted during the Zoo’s accreditation inspection. The accreditation process ensures that the Zoo meets rigorous standards, including animal care, veterinary programs, conservation, education, safety and other areas. The AZA requires zoos and aquariums to successfully complete this extensive process every five years to remain accredited.
“We are gratified that the AZA recognizes our Zoo’s commitment to outstanding animal care, the many ways we work to save nature, and how we inspire people to care for our world,” said Dr. Rob Shumaker, president & CEO. “It is an honor to continue to work with AZA staff and our accredited sister organizations. We are proud to be part of this professional community.”
In addition to being a leader in global conservation, the Indianapolis Zoo is one of the state’s largest attractions, hosting up to 1.2 million visitors annually.
