Members of the Jonathan Jennings chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution joined host Patty Spitler and WISH TV anchor Melea VanOstrand to talk about their work cleaning veterans’ headstones.
“We love to do that,” Heath Abert, president of the Jonathan Jennings Chapter, said. “We focus on the patriotism, but we also focus on education. Respect.”
The effort began when a chapter member stumbled upon Veteransa small, tucked-away cemetery with parking for only two cars.
“She came to us and said, ‘It’s kind of a mess. Can we do something?’” Abert said. “She had always been interested in cleaning headstones. So she introduced us to the world of cleaning headstones, and that’s what we do now.”
From there, the chapter expanded its reach. Members now visit different cemeteries across the area, identify patriots and veterans buried there, and assess what help is needed.
