Mike Ahern reflects on years as popular WISH-TV news anchor

Mike Ahern, a longtime WISH-TV anchor, was honored in a reunion-style conversation that reflected on his career, colleagues, and lasting influence on local journalism. He talks to Patty and former WISH-TV chief photographer Steve Sweitzer about coverage of major weather events, political stories, overnight breaking news, and the intensity and teamwork of early newsroom life.

He also fondly recalled his longtime on-air partnership with colleague Debby Knox.

After 37 years at the station, Ahern retired in 2004. Health setbacks after retirement contributed to his withdrawal from public life, including a stroke and broken hip. But now he’s back and enjoying connections with his broadcast friends, including Patty!

Looking back on his career, Ahern said, “I was the luckiest man on Earth.”
