What happens when the person you love turns out to be someone you never really knew?

That’s the unsettling question at the center of “Gentle Monster,” a psychological drama starring Léa Seydoux.

In a recent Patty’s Picks film review, critic Patty Spitler highlighted the film’s psychological suspense and its unsettling exploration of trust and relationships.

Seydoux plays a concert pianist who moves her family to the countryside in hopes of helping her husband recover from burnout and creating a more peaceful life for their family.

Their fresh start takes a disturbing turn when police arrive with serious accusations against her husband. He is suspected of being a child predator, leaving his wife questioning whether she ever truly knew the man she loves.

The Austrian film, which was also featured at the Cannes Film Festival, explores trust, family and the unsettling possibility that someone closest to you may be hiding a dark secret.

“Gentle Monster” is rated R and has a runtime of 1 hour and 55 minutes. It is currently playing in theaters and will begin streaming on Netflix Nov. 18. The film also stars Catherine Deneuve.

Patty said the film is the kind of story that stays with viewers long after the credits roll. She notes that its psychological suspense delivers a different kind of scare than traditional horror films known for their jump scares.

“Its psychological twists and lingering tension make it a film worth watching,” she said.

How many stars does she give it? Watch and see!
