Patty's Picks: Newest 'Moana' live action film is nothing special
Disney’s live-action remake of “Moana” is in theaters, drawing mixed reviews, including a 36% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Film critic Patty Spitler gave the PG-rated film two out of five stars. The movie runs 1 hour, 56 minutes.
The adaptation follows Disney’s animated films released in 2016 and 2024. It tells the story of Moana, a young voyager who sets out to save her people with the help of the demigod Maui, played by Dwayne Johnson.
Spitler said the film is entertaining but falls short of expectations.
“It’s not horrible, it’s entertaining,” Spitler said. “For my sensibilities, it’s always a treat to see Johnson.”

She also suggested Disney’s decision to remake the film was “probably for the money.”
Despite her criticism, Spitler said she enjoyed seeing Johnson return to the role, noting she interviewed the actor about 20 years ago in Hollywood.
