Patty's Picks: 'Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie' is a fun and funny romp

“Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie” draws on more than a decade of brand loyalty. It was launched roughly 13 years ago as a television series on Nickelodeon before growing into a wide-ranging franchise that includes toys, games and home video releases. Film critic Patty Spitler says the latest film leans into that foundation, pairing the series’ signature canine heroes with the crowd-pleasing appeal of dinosaurs.

Ryder and his rescue pups are back, and this time they’re trading familiar city streets for an island full of dinosaurs in the latest “Paw Patrol” film, a family-friendly romp.

Rated PG and running 1 hour and 28 minutes, the animated comedy adventure kicks off when a mysterious storm sends the pups’ ship off course, stranding them on an uncharted tropical island teeming with prehistoric creatures. There, they meet Rex, a pup who has been marooned on the island and quickly becomes the crew’s guide through the unfamiliar terrain.

The fun doesn’t last long before trouble arrives in the form of Mayor Humdinger, the franchise’s reliably scheming villain. Humdinger sets his sights on what he claims is the biggest diamond mine in the world, resorting to explosives to extract the island’s resources, despite repeated warnings that detonating anything near the island’s active volcano could trigger a catastrophe.

The stakes are high, but the tone stays light, which is exactly what fans of the long-running franchise have come to expect. “Paw Patrol is positively fun and funny,” says Patty. Her dog, Harry, really liked it, too!
