'By Any Means' is powerful true story

What happens when a murder investigation unfolds against the backdrop of one of the most turbulent periods in American history?

Film critic Patty Spitler spotlighted “By Any Means,” a new Paramount Pictures film that takes viewers to Mississippi in 1966, during the height of the civil rights movement.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II stars as a young Black FBI agent investigating the brutal killings of civil rights leaders. His investigation leads him to an unlikely partner, a notorious mafia hitman played by Mark Wahlberg.

The action thriller blends crime, history and questions of justice while exploring the racial tensions and struggles of the civil rights era.

For Patty, the film’s connection to real events is one of its most compelling elements.

“What’s also very compelling about this film is the fact that it’s based on a true story,” she said.

The film explores themes of justice, vengeance, life, liberty and racial issues while revisiting a pivotal period in American history.

Patty said the movie encourages audiences to look at how far the country has come while recognizing the work that remains.

“For me, the most compelling aspect of ‘By Any Means’ is that it makes you think about our past and how far we’ve come and how much further we need to go,” she observed.

Directed by Elegance Bratton and written by Sascha Penn, “By Any Means” runs one hour and 45 minutes and is rated R.

Spitler praised the film’s combination of compelling storytelling and historic significance.
