Film critic Patty Spitler says Steven Spielberg revisits one of his signature themes, the possibility that humans are not alone in the universe, in his new sci-fi thriller, “Disclosure Day.”
The film continues Spielberg’s exploration of extraterrestrial life, a subject he previously examined in films such as “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” and “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.” It also touches on theories involving potential government secrecy surrounding alien encounters.
The cast includes Emily Blunt, Colin Firth and Josh O’Connor.
Spitler said Spielberg has long engaged with people who believe in life beyond Earth, which may have influenced the film’s concept. At the center of the story, she said, is a broader question: how humanity might react to confirmation that it is not alone.
“Would you be happy or sad to find out that there are others out there?” she said.
“Disclosure Day” runs 2 hours and 25 minutes and is rated PG-13. Early reception has been mixed, though the film currently holds an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
