Spooky season opens at Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites
From colorful fall foliage to spine-tingling ghost stories and everything in between — visitors of all ages and scare levels can enjoy a hair-raising array of events as spooky season begins at the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites.
The Indiana State Museum’s feature event of the fall, Night at the Boo Bash will return from 6-8:30 p.m. on Oct. 9. During this beloved annual event, the museum will come alive with ghoulish good times across all three floors, led by a cast of quirky characters inspired by iconic museum artifacts.
As Fred the Mastodon looks on, visitors can step inside the scream booth to measure their shrieks or use funky instruments to create spooky sounds. Connie Fusion’s spooktacular science show is sure to get a big reaction, and families can stop by Dr. Rose’s Mad Science Lab to make their own vial of light.
Children can spin Dunky’s candy wheel to win Halloween treats, with candy provided by Bassett Services. As guests creep through Ross the Sloth’s Giggle Graveyard, they can use a UV flashlight to illuminate whimsical epitaphs that are sure to tickle a funny bone. Visitors can get as close as they dare to live, crawling critters from All Bugs Go To Kevin, then see how many plastic insects they can land on the nearby webs using Cricket’s critter catapults.
Everyone is encouraged to come in their favorite Halloween outfits and compete for prizes in the costume contest before hitting the dance floor to twist and shout with the sounds of monstrous music.
The eerie excitement will continue at the museum with Twilight Tales. These after-hours experiences invite visitors to explore the museum’s galleries by flashlight to learn the myths behind mysterious artifacts and find out what’s hiding in the shadows. The Strange Encounters tour, happening at 7 p.m. on Oct. 21 and 23, is designed especially for families while the Beyond the Grave tour, at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 28 and 30, will be ideal for adults.
More eerie excitement awaits at T.C. Steele State Historic Site in Nashville. At Ghost Stories Under the October Sky, from 7-9 p.m. on Oct. 16, visitors can pack a flashlight, blankets and a picnic to enjoy as they sit by the site’s cemetery and hear haunted tales from the Bloomington Storytellers Guild.
These locations as well as the museum system’s other nearby site, Levi and Catharine Coffin State Historic Site in Fountain City, would make a fun and easy day trip from anywhere in central Indiana, allowing visitors to enjoy the vibrant autumn foliage as they travel.
Advance registration is required for most spooky season programs at the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites. Ticket prices vary by program, and members will receive a 25% discount on ticket prices.
